Old Charades – “Wolves” is this week’s Friday Pump Up Jam

I’m a big fan of Old Charades, let me start there. Why? Well, the guys in the band are just straight up good dudes. I’ve literally watch the drummer, Jerry, grow up before my eyes. He was a little punk kid that frequented the bar/music venue that I used to own. I disliked a lot of the kids that hung out there. Come to think of it, I dislike A LOT of people in general. Cynical, right? Not Jerry though, I’ve always rooted for that kid. Sean and Tom are really nice guys too.

So, do I have anything to say about their music? Yes. Yes, I do.

It’s gritty, with the soul of Bruce Springsteen, yet it remains true to the band’s punk and alternative rock influences.

Fuck you if that last sentence didn’t make your eye brows raise a little. That was a golden rock-and-roll journalist line right there. I said so much and absolutely nothing at the same time. I’ve still got it.

That being said, I love Sean Flynn’s voice. This band has been nominated for multiple Steamtown Music Awards and I’m stoked that they’re playing the Electric City Music Conference this year. They’ve always supported the shit I’ve done and I’ll always support them. That’s what it’s all about.

Enjoy the song, “Wolves,” it does not suck at all. It’s really good.

Here’s what real music journalists had to say about them:

Hit the stage: “Scranton/Philadelphia based folk punk band Old Charades are gearing up to released their new EP Stories From 2nd Street next Friday, April 14th. They’re gearing up for the record release show at The Bog in Scranton, PA with Esta Coda, Clever Clever and The Hill You Die On. For more info on the show, check out their page! In the meantime, you can take a listen to their latest single “Wolves” below! I’m currently jamming with my bedroom windows open and embracing the nice afternoon breeze. Highly recommend.”

NEPA Scene: “If Bruce Springsteen was 30 years younger and pissed off,” Old Charades is what he would sound like, according to bassist Tom Lopes, particularly if The Boss came from Scranton instead of New Jersey. They embrace that Northeastern Pennsylvania punk/indie rock sound, for sure, but it’s their folk and blues rock influences mixed with some Philly rock (where drummer Jerry Connor goes to school) that sets them apart. Rounded out by vocalist/guitarist Sean Flynn, they maintain a simple, tight sound as a trio that’s easy to understand and relate to.

The songs of Old Charades feel direct, emotional, raw, and distinctly American, telling true stories with hard-earned lessons from a dimly lit basement or corner bar. They’ll shake the cobwebs out of old memories and make some new ones for you in the packed watering hole just down the street.”

I’d also like to note that Old Charades made cassette tapes of their new album.

I do kind of hate that move. Why? Because no one can play them anymore.

That’s a lie. I hate it because I remember when that was actually the main platform I used to listen to music and that makes me feel old.

These little shits never bought a cassette in their lives. Kidding. Kind of. Love you guys.

Sorry…. It’s been a week.
