  • 1969:  John Madden named head coach of the Oakland Raiders; in the ten years under Madden’s coaching, the Raiders never finished worse than 2nd place in the AFC West
  • 1991:  Baseball Hall of Fame’s board of directors vote 12-0 to bar Pete Rose

February 5th

  • 1989:  Kareem Abdul-Jabbar becomes the first NBA player to score 38,000 points
  • 1990:  Notre Dame becomes the first team to sell its game to a major network (NBC)

February 6th

  • 1958:  Ted Williams signs with Boston Red Sox for $135,000, making him highest paid player in baseball
  • 1971:  First time a golf ball is hit on the moon, by Alan Shepard

February 7th

  • 1958:  Brooklyn Dodgers officially become Los Angeles Dodgers
  • 2010:  The NFL Super Bowl tops the 1983 series finale of M*A*S*H to become the most-watched TV program in history with over 106 million viewers, according to Nielsen Company

February 8th

  • 1936:  First NFL draft held. Jay Berwanger becomes the first player ever drafted at number 1. Berwanger never plays a snap in the NFL.
  • 1986:  At 5 feet 7 inches, Spud Webb of the Atlanta Hawks wins the NBA Slam Dunk competition

February 9th

  • 1895:  Volleyball is invented by W. G. Morgan in Massachusetts
  • 1971:  Leroy “Satchel” Paige becomes first negro-league player elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame

February 10th

  • 1920:  Major League Baseball prohibits all pitches involving tampering with the ball
  • 2006:  Alfonso Soriano sets a record for the highest salary ever awarded in baseball arbitration – he received $10 million to play outfield for the Washington Nationals
