  • 1934: Horton Smith wins first Masters golf tournament with a 4-day tally of 284
  • 1995: Mike Tyson released from jail after serving three years

March 26th

  • 1972: Los Angeles Lakers break NBA record by winning 69 of 82 games
  • 1979: 41st NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship: Michigan State Spartans beat Indiana State Sycamores, 75-64 as Magic Johnson outscores Larry Bird, 24-19; this snaps Indiana State’s 33-game win streak

March 27th

  • 1939: First ever NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship game: Oregon beats Ohio State 46-33
  • 1991: NCAA bans University of Minnesota football team from postseason play in 1992 due to recruiting violations and other rule-breaking activities

March 28th

  • 1891: First world weightlifting championship held
  • 1972: Wilt Chamberlain plays his last pro basketball game

March 29th

  • 1981: The first London Marathon is held, consisting of 7,500 runners
  • 1996: NFL team Baltimore Ravens created, originally due to Cleveland Browns intending to move to Baltimore

March 30th

  • 1889: John T. Reid opens first US golf course in Yonkers, NY
  • 1993: Peanuts comic strip character Charlie Brown hits a baseball game-winning home run, his first in 43 years

March 31st

  • 1968: AL baseball club in Seattle is named the Pilots; in 1970, Seattle Pilots file bankruptcy and are sold to Milwaukee
  • 1998: MLB’s Tampa Bay Devil Rays team play first game as they hosted the Detroit Tigers
