  • 1964:  Cassius Clay (later Muhammad Ali) defeats world heavyweight boxing champ, Sonny Liston, with a 7th round TKO
  • 1993:  MLB’s Florida Marlins introduce their mascot “Billy” to the world

February 26th

  • 1935:  New York Yankees release Babe Ruth, he signs with the Boston Braves
  • 1981:  Boston Bruins and Minnesota North Stars play most penalty-filled NHL game in history – 406 total minutes of penalties

February 27th

  • 1901:  US Baseball Rules Committee declares all foul balls to count as strikes except after two strikes
  • 1992:  Tiger Woods, at age 16, becomes the youngest to golf in a PGA Tour event since 1957

February 28th  

  • 1940:  First televised basketball game (college game at Madison Square Garden – University of Pittsburgh beat Fordham University 50-37)
  • 1971:  Jack Nicklaus wins the 53rd PGA Championship leading to his second golf grand slam (winning all four majors in the same season)

March 1st

  • 1969:  Yankees’ Mickey Mantle retires from baseball
  • 1988:  Wayne Gretzky passes Gordie Howe with record 1,050th NHL assist (Gretzky ends career with 1,963 assists)

March 2nd  

  • 1951:  First NBA All-Star Game held – East beat West 111-94 at Boston Garden
  • 1962:  Wilt Chamberlain scores 100 points in a single NBA game for the Philadelphia Warriors at the Hershey Sports Arena in Hershey, PA

March 3rd

  • 1875:  First hockey game on record takes place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada
  • 2007:  MMA fighter, Randy Couture, wins the UFC heavyweight championship at age 43 in the main event of UFC 68
