  • 1960: NFL announces Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings franchises
  • 1984: Los Angeles Kings stop Wayne Gretzky’s 51-game goal scoring streak

January 29th

  • 1963: First inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced – Jim Thorpe, Red Grange and George Halas
  • 1995: San Francisco 49ers become the first NFL franchise to win 5 Super Bowls by defeating the San Diego Chargers 49-26

January 30th

  • 1936: Fans choose “The Bees” when polled to pick the new name for baseball’s Boston Braves. The name doesn’t catch on and is scrapped by the 1940 season
  • 2000: Louis Rams win the NFL Championship title for the first time since 1951, beating Tennessee Titans 23-16

January 31st

  • 1991: Standing 5’10”, Michael Adams of the Denver Nuggets becomes the shortest NBA player in history to record a triple-double in a game
  • 1993: The Buffalo Bills become the first NFL team to lose three consecutive Super Bowls, getting  defeated by Dallas Cowboys 52-17

February 1st

  • 1968: Vince Lombardi resigns as coach of the Green Bay Packers
  • 1992: Barry Bonds signs baseball’s highest single-year contract at $4.7million

February 2nd

  • 1892: Longest boxing match under modern rules takes place, 77 rounds between Harry Sharpe and Frank Crosby
  • 1974: Smallest crowd at Cleveland Arena recorded with 1,641 in attendance for game between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors

February 3rd

  • 1876: With $800, Albert Spalding starts sporting good company, manufacturing first official baseball, tennis ball, basketball, golf ball and football
  • 2008: The New York Giants beat the previously undefeated New England Patriots 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII
