Rick Moranis Returns to Acting

Whether you know him as Louis Tully (Ghostbusters I & II), Wayne Szalinski (Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise), Lord Dark Helmet (Spaceballs) or Danny O’Shea (Little Giants), Hollywood has been without the comedic acting genius that is Rick Moranis since 1997.

It was announced on Thursday that Moranis, along with SCTV sidekick, Dave Thomas, plan to reunite as their beer-drinking duo, Bob and Doug McKenzie, for a fundraiser sponsored by Second City Toronto on July 18th. The benefit for Jake Thomas and Spinal Cord Injury Ontario will be hosted by Martin Short and has a star-studded cast, including fellow Canadian comedians Dan Aykroyd, Eugene Levy, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Paul Shaffer, and many more. Surprise musical guests also plan to perform.

Rick Moranis has been on an acting hiatus since 1997. After his wife passed away from breast cancer in the early ’90s, he quitely begun to pull out of the Hollywood limelight. Being a single parent, he found it was too difficult to juggle parenthood while being a traveling actor. By the late ’90s, he called it quits for good…at least, until now.

One of my favorite Moranis films is Little Giants. Little Giants took peewee football and combined it with the classic David vs. Goliath battle. Moranis played Danny O’Shea who coached a group of misfit kids known as the Little Giants. O’Shea’s older brother headed the Pee-Wee Cowboys, a much more skilled and seasoned team. As the brothers clashed so did the kids. It really is a good watch still to this day. Next rainy day, bust out the old VHS player and pop it in. I highly recommend it.

As a fan of all of Moranis’ work (yes, even Big Bully) I really hope this July return rejuvenates his motivation to get back into the world of acting. He turned down a cameo for last summer’s Ghostbusters remake (can’t blame him for that) but I’d like to see if he’s still got it. Let’s see a Littler Giants get made…you know Ed O’Neill is in.
