Deaf Rhino - Can't Say It Ain't True | Friday Pump Up Jams

I love me some Deaf Rhino. I came across this band a few years back at the Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg. I didn’t actually see them perform, I just happened to meet the guys and we chopped it up for a few minutes, exchanged cards and went on our way. Honestly, I don’t usually check out bands that ask me to. Unless I know them or have heard of them. Sorry, not sorry. Remember, I’m a sports guy, but I’m THEE music guy. I get 1,000+ requests to “check out” people’s music a year. So, if there’s not something unique about it, chances are I’m just being polite and moving on. These guys were super nice and looked like pure rock and roll. So, I went home, googled them and fell in love.

I’m a sucker for anything that reminds me of Circa Survive or the Deaftones. I’m not saying that the bands sound similar, because Deaf Rhino is something all their own. Let me remind you to click here to follow my “Friday Pump Up Jams” playlist on Spotify.

Deaf Rhino is kicking ass it all over the East Coast. Especially in NYC (which is the hardest market to break). Also, they’re playing Scranton and Wilkes-Barre pretty often too. You’re welcome, NEPA. I’ll just go ahead and take credit for introducing the band to the market. You can check them out on this year’s Electric City Music Conference in September. This will be the band’s third year playing the festival (most regional bands don’t get invited back for multiple appearances).

At times, it plays like a grunge record from the early ’90s: mid-tempo songs played with aggression supplied with plenty of volume. And like grunge’s influences there are touches of heavy metal time-signatures, met with the unbridled energy of punk. Fluid lead guitar riffs scream over crunchy distorted riffs. Dirt Rust Chaos also seems to take cues from the adventurous moments of early My Morning Jacket. There are several moments where it sounds like a heavier version of the band’s classic, Z.”
