  • 1892: Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley of Preston proposes silver challenge cup for hockey (Stanley Cup)
  • 1995: Michael Jordan announces his return to basketball with his former team, the Chicago Bulls

March 19th

  • 1975: Pennsylvania is first US state to allow girls to compete with boys in high school sports competitions
  • 1991: NFL owners strip the Cardinals of hosting the 1993 Super Bowl game due to Arizona not recognizing Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

March 20th

  • 1897: First recorded US intercollegiate basketball game, Yale beat University of Pennsylvania 32-10
  • 1973: Roberto Clemente elected into Hall of Fame, 11 weeks after his death

  • 1980: President Jimmy Carter announces that the United States will boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow
  • 1984: NFL owners pass the infamous anti-celebration rule

  • 1934: The first Masters golf championship begins in Augusta, Georgia
  • 1969: In the 31st NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship UCLA beats Purdue 92-72, winning its 5th national championship in six years

March 23rd

  • 1962: Wake Forest coach “Bones” McKinney becomes second person to play and coach
  • 1994: Wayne Gretzky sets NHL record by scoring his 802nd career goal

March 24th

  • 1973: San Francisco 49ers’ president, Lou Spadia, proposes NFL expand to 30 teams
  • 2001: During an exhibition baseball game between the San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks, Randy Johnson’s fastball hits and instantly kills a dove flying in front of home plate. The bird appears to explode as the pitch sends it over the catcher’s head
